Our Daily Bread

Finally got around to watching Our Daily Bread, directed by Nikolaus Geyrhalter.  This is a documentary about mass food production.  There is no dialogue.  Probably a good thing too because it was made in Germany.  Okay – I’ve become like those mindless kids.  I’m finding it really hard to watch a movie that has no dialogue!

The really hard part is watching how they treat animals and plants all to bring massive quantities of food to market. The animals are treated so poorly  – really makes you wonder if they have a spirit and how that affects the consumer of that animal.  I don’t think I could handle all those baby chicks that way. I’ll never look at bacon the same way, that’s for sure.

The plants for the most part are handled as you would expect; maybe a little rough on the nut trees.  It’s the spraying of pesticides that makes you think:  is all this really necessary?

I’ve never really thought about where salt comes from.  An uncut ride down an elevator shaft into the mine took over 2 minutes at a high rate of speed.  I wonder how far down underground they have to go.  And then it was so cavernous – you wonder if they mine all of it there won’t be any left.

Even makes you think about the workers that are part of the cycle.  And so are we I guess, for that matter.   Definitely food for thought – no pun intended.

I don’t know what the answers are.  I just don’t think this is what God had in mind.  I just hope there are brilliant minds out there coming up with more humane ways to feed the world’s population.

If you’ve seen it, what was your reaction?

Here’s a link to the movie’s homepage.
